Community Life Oral Report to Provincial Convention 2016 – Linda McClinton

The chair of Community Life encompasses all aspects of our lives no matter where we live.  We can all do our part in making our communities a better place to live. By volunteering at Pregnancy Centers, Centers for Abused Women and Children, attending Life Chain, supporting Pro-Life and Anti-Pornography or helping to serve at St. Vincent de Paul dinners at Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas, or daily soup kitchens, we ensure the dignity and rights of persons.  After I moved to Prince George I started volunteering at St. Vincent de Paul.  There were approximately 400 people attending an Easter or Thanksgiving dinner and now maybe up to 900. Everybody has a right to food, shelter, warm clothing, health care and love.

No matter how little we do, there are so many places and people in need. I have volunteered for our local Hospice Society for many years and am very grateful that it has become the main theme for our National, this year. For our World Day of Prayer for Palliative Care, a lady from our local 10-bed Hospice spoke and I was asked to speak on Broken Circle (a 10 week program for grieving adults, I have completed this 8 times).

The Government of Canada has resettled an estimated 27,000 plus Syrian refugees now. Our commitment to resettling refugees is continuing and our help and donations are required. With the 5 years of the Syrian crisis there are children who have only known violence and conflict their whole lives. Over 5 million child refugees are in need of food, care and protection. This has been our main focus in this term of Community Life. When you go to a hotel save daily the shampoo, soap, etc and donate it to abused women’s shelters or St. Vincent’s.

Most councils reported donating 1% funds to Development & Peace. There is such a need in Canada and the world as we support natural disasters in countries in crisis, such as the devastating earthquake in Haiti and tsunamis in Japan.

Our biggest challenge, it seems, is finding members willing to take on the chair of Community Life. Only 81 out of 130 councils reported. As you can see it is a most important chair with so much to learn. I know if you just get involved with any of our committees you will learn so much more about the scope of what we do as Catholic Women in Canada and grow to love the League so much more. Yes, it takes time to be involved in anything worthwhile, but the benefits are outstanding.

Get involved as there is a huge shortage of members willing to stand, and the need to get the word out in this time of crisis in our world.

God Bless. May our Lady of Good Counsel Pray For Us
