Past-President’s Oral Report to Provincial Convention 2016 – Doreen Gowans

Do you realize the power we have as a Past President?  No matter what level of the League we are on, WE are an asset to our council.  We have the knowledge to support and teach our members on the Protocols of the Catholic Women’s League of Canada.  We take the time and responsibility to mentor our council members, by helping to bolster their self esteem.  Experience is the best teacher and WE have the experience and it is an honour to share our knowledge and affirm our members.  We have the opportunity to educate, inform, and inspire through personal contact and our communiqués.

Presidents, I encourage you to invite your past presidents to share their CWL journey at your meetings or use their knowledge to give a workshop.  Past presidents have a wealth of knowledge – put it to good use.  Members like to hear how we have grown spiritually, how we have had opportunities to educate ourselves by doing things we never thought were possible.

For example when I first started, I was very shy and afraid to speak in front of others, and now I’m standing before you.  The opportunity to develop my personal spiritual growth has been amazing.  Isn’t that what we all want and are striving for?  I’ve had the best education any university could offer by being a CWL member, trusting the Holy Spirit to lead and guide me, and by taking the challenge when and where ever it presents itself.  We are never alone as there is always someone who has gone before us who is willing to help.  We just have to ask.

My journey over the last 13 years on the Provincial CWL Council has taken me from doing a reading for the first time at a Mass with the Bishop as a presider, to organizing workshops, campaigning against Human trafficking, to presenting our BC & Yukon resolutions to our Provincial Government and of having our council receive a unanimous vote of confidence to increase the provincial per capita funding.  Not to mention all the travelling from one end of our beautiful province and territory to the other, where friendships were formed by meeting so many wonderful members having been greeted with your smiles and those beautiful hugs.  I hope they will continue.  A very special time for me was when I received a letter from His Holiness Pope Francis where he imparted his Apostolic Blessing on the Catholic Women’s League of BC and Yukon at our convention.

At the time I lost my two close league sisters through a tragic accident, to my most recent visit to the hospital, my league sisters have been with me in prayer every step of the way.  I have truly felt God, with me, during and after these events, thanks to all your Mass cards and prayers.

Ladies it is a journey I would like to repeat as it has been spiritually enriching, educational, FUN and I love the League!  However the time has come for me to hand that opportunity over to you!

I personally invite you to take the next step in your journey with the Catholic Women’s League of Canada by saying ‘Yes’ to the League and giving your journey to the Holy Spirit to lead and guide you along the way.  God is good!  Trust in Him and GREAT things will happen to you!

Thank you for the best Sisterhood the League can offer.  All of you are a great TEAM of sisters and Spiritual Advisors.  Thanks for giving me the opportunity to serve YOU!
